Computer Science is a really large field of topic, but that’s a good thing. There are so many ways to be introduced to it, which is great because our lives revolve around it daily. When searching up the definition of Computer Science, you’re left with a summary stating how it’s the study of computers and computational systems. While that is most definitely true, you can also view it as thinking like a computer. A computer uses advanced programming to do tasks and communicate with the user and itself.
You may be asking, how does building a computer have anything to do with this? I’ll tell you why it has everything to do with it. Building that computer showed how I was practicing engineering, math, science, and much more. To start, I had to select components that I knew would be compatible with each other. In order to make sure of that, I had to research what specifications would match up with one another. There is different math involved with this process which gave me a little spark into mathematics, which is what I’m currently minoring in at college.
The next subject that would cover this is engineering. After all, I am building and constructing a computer. These parts work together in a specific way, and making sure you build an efficient system is important. Efficiency is achieved by assuring that each component is around the same power. There are thousands of different combinations that would theoretically work, but it is your job to make sure everything is optimized.
I don’t have to tell you that building computers deals with technology. Technology is a crucial aspect of my generation and future generations. Technology has given us innovation and so much more for our species. We wouldn’t be where we are today without it. Technology has opened the door to help us think computationally and I can’t wait to see where it takes us.
Now that I’ve summarized everything, here’s the answer on how all of this introduced me to computer science. You see, after I built the computer, was when I really got hooked. There are so many capabilities on a computer. The software that it uses in order to create, communicate, etc. is so cool. I realized if I can dive deeper into how the computer communicates, then maybe I can take full advantage of the system. Every computer has this thing called a console. In that console, you can write code to communicate and send commands to the computer. There are so many other ways that you can code, but this was the first way I was introduced to it. After playing around I became curious about what else I could do. My school just started offering a course called Intro to Python. I’d heard of this term called “Python” before, but wasn’t exactly familiar with it. I decided to take the class and look where I’m at today.
Computer Science is one of the best subjects one can learn for the future, and I was lucky enough for computers to be my gateway. There are so many different fields in Computer Science, so there is always a place for someone. Whether it’s being a data analyst, software engineer, or something else, you can become so successful by finding what sparks your interest. Be sure to look into programs that can teach you more about what Computer Science is and what it has to offer.
